Between Narnia and Nativity
Winter isn't for wimps. It's prime time for hibernation.
It's weighty heaviness can steal joy right out of weary hearts.
Fog-leaden and snow-laden lands lead to low moods for many.
Misted breath and frosty fingers steal in, seep through the window pane and wrap themselves around my brain.
I succumb to the numbing, become muffled and mournful.
Such tenacious chill of mind and will could take some shifting. Just like my duvet, I sink into its sonorous depths.
Even creativity is being capricious, wearing a sly smile as she slides away evasive.
Poetry usually flows like a babbling brook before singing itself onto the page.
But now? It lies turgid, a murky pond of indifference where I dredge hopeful for silver in the silt.
Words have become as weeds clinging to the reeds, refusing to rise obligingly to the surface.
Here we are:caught between Narnia and Nativity, aching for Light to come.
Can it really be winter all the time and never Christmas? Surely not. Our souls crave celebration.
And won't Light and Joy seep their way through the grey-gloom, soften cold hearts, draw back the dark?
Oh yes, they will.
We may be overshadowed by our circumstances but we're covered by grace, nevertheless.
Because the One who came into Mary's womb is the same One who comes into our deep and silent places.
She pondered how that could happen, much as we wonder when.. this pain will ease, this burden will be lifted, this sickness will leave, this problem will be shifted.
I read:"'How will this be,' Mary asks the Angel, 'Since I am a virgin?' The Angel answered, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you'" ~ Luke 1:34-35
And these words hover in my head, shape themselves into a poem:
"Overshadowed
Heavy cloak of holiness
wrapped with softness
Burning light of purity
lies sealed within
Revelation promises
fulfilled in Him
Developing Christ-child
swims in the womb
Stretching over time
to give Him room
Waiting for the right moment
in which He'll come
Angelic hosts sing
a welcome song
Mantle of mercy and grace
drapes lightly on
all who receive and embrace"

As words flow once more so does insight, inspiration and gratitude.
For we also are overshadowed; we have Holy Spirit, The Comforter Himself, wrapping arms of Love around us all the time.
We have His continual, Light-filled presence, His fire, His infilling.
As gentle dove, He speaks soothing balm to winter-weary hearts and whispers, 'Soon'
"Soon, My child, your waiting will be over.
Soon, those inner longings will be met.
Sooner than you know I will reveal His Light in your darkness, His Peace in your perplexity.
Hold on for a little bit longer.
Keep the flame burning in your heart; keep Hope alive.
A faltering wick He will not quench or snuff out.
Hide yourself in the shelter of the Father's wings for He is your refuge and shelter against every storm.
Allow Me to pour the oil of Joy on your troubled soul.
At just the right time the Christ-child will be birthed anew in hearts ready to receive Him.
New life will spring from the old."
And as we listen to His voice, as we breathe the Peace of His Presence, as we respond to what we are hearing we are slowly filled with life again.
Chilled hearts thaw. Minds become enlightened, grasping Truth.
Our world becomes brighter with expectation. Hope of renewal and change.
Jesus is coming. God is with us. Emmanuel is here.
We can breathe easy. Our dark winter of discontent is coming to an end.
I'm joining here with Janis and other like-minded friends for #sundaystillness as we press pause in the midst of the busyness.

Listening to your life
Imagination can take us places that bear no relation to reality.
I began this year with a conviction and desire to listen better to all God wants to speak into my life. It follows on naturally from my #oneword365 being 'listen'.
My mind envisaged restful moments spent relaxing in His presence while He poured out words of wisdom and peace.
It would be wonderful. I would hear messages of encouragement to share with others. I would drift through my days with an increasing awareness of Holy Spirit's whispers on the wind.
Only..it hasn't quite panned out that way. Who knew listening could be so painful, challenging, personally humiliating and hard?
Instead of a lovely lightness and liveliness of heart, I feel drained, weary, worn out, with worms eating at my soul.
Exhaustion makes me cranky. Impatience reigns. Sin crouches at the door waiting to ensnare me. It's my own overly hasty 'wish-I-could-swallow-them-back' words I'm hearing, and the sad resigned response from my husband.
All God seems to be saying is, "Look out. You've made another blunder". My heart is heavy with sorrow over faults and failings. Peace has flown out the window and listening has become an act of obedience rather than joy.
Yesterday, following a run of wakeful, pain-filled nights, I unleashed another impatient tirade on my beloved. In full flow until an insistent ring stopped me in my tracks.
It was enough to bring me to my senses. And as I paused to listen to a stranger's voice oozing warmth and understanding, I lost it all over again with a healing unravelling cascade of tears.
For here was someone from a ministry we support giving us a courtesy call to say thanks and ask if we needed prayer. Ready to reach out a hand, to stand in the gap and intercede.
Life interrupted as God saw a need and stepped in. A holy moment in the midst of mayhem. Reminder of His goodness and grace seeping into the cracks and crevices of our days.
Knowing we're all in the process of becoming what He wants us to be ~ beautiful and strong in Him.
Reassurance to restore faith and confidence that His promises stand firm, unshakable as Rock and ready to be fulfilled. A life can be changed in an instant. Calm can replace chaos.
Living as we do with continual physical and mental health challenges, we cling to His word in desperation. How long, O Lord? When, God when? This the silent mantra we move to.
Nothing external has changed. But we are altered by a few moments of intent listening to another speaking as if from the Lord.
I still bear burdens Jesus aches to carry for me. I still mess up and have unwise words escape my mouth. But God is reminding me of His nearness and drawing me to His side in increasing dependence and trust.
******
And God has blessed me further with a 'Prayer Whisper' from His heart to mine this morning:
"I will speak to you this year in small ways because I am training you to trace My hand at work in the minutiae of daily life. As you see and hear Me speaking in the little things, so you will develop a sensitive ear that is more attuned to My presence.
Sometimes there will be a flood of words. At others you will have to strain senses and flex faith muscles to be aware of what I'm saying.
It is vital for you to listen to your life, your body, emotions, actions and reactions as well as heeding My voice. My desire is for you to live mindfully; be aware of your need of grace, the space you create for misery or joy, the weariness signalling time to withdraw, be silent and rest in My loving embrace.
Walk through your days with an attitude of praise before you see any change for the good happening. Praise paves the way for My presence to operate in all its fullness and opens the door to thankfulness within you ~ regardless of circumstances.
Your inheritance as My child is to experience beauty for ashes and joy in the midst of adversity."
*******
Looking for the sound of laughter in my #1000gifts count yesterday seemed impossible. So many days feel circumscribed by weakness, weariness and pain, bereft of joy in any measure. Yet it was there.
Here was a gift from God ~ a call to bring me back to awareness and a trickle of smiles to treasure as we watched a mini video of our grandson's alert opening up to life around him.
This precious young life, a bare two months old, already operating as God intends us to ~ embracing life in all its fullness with an open, receptive mind and heart.
Babies and children have much to teach us about relishing the moment. In the deliberate seeking out joy can be found. In surrender to seconds, seasons and seeing anew we can listen to our lives and see that they are a holy offering to the Author of life itself.

And with Ruth for #Letterto This week's prompt is 'Letter to the tired'
**NOTE** ~ As you can see, I'm just a beginner in the art of listening but I hope to grow and improve as the year goes on. To help me to do just that I am joining Nacole's community of women who want to listen hard to God, to their lives and to one another. You're very welcome and warmly invited to join us as we live and learn together.

Letter to tuck in your pocket
Receiving hand-written letters in the mail is a rarity these days.
When we are eagerly waiting to hear from a loved one, then it is even more special.
Words are devoured. Sentences savoured. Lines linger in our minds.
And we read them over and over again, unwilling to put them down or away.
So we tuck the letter in a secret place away from prying eyes, ready to return to at our leisure and enjoy it all over again.
Have you ever thought about God's word being like a personal letter to our souls?
We benefit from seeing it as such.
The Bible is His love letter to reassure, comfort, speak truth, grace and light into our darkness.
Words of affirmation, encouragement, help, healing, hope, forgiveness and mercy.
Words that change lives, restore, transform, teach, guide, give wisdom, strength and peace.
Who wouldn't want such a letter?
And as we make our journey of faith, God continues to pour forth words we can tuck away into our pockets, hearts and minds.
They may be direct from the Bible as words seem to come alive for us as we read them. Or they may be words He whispers close any time when we are receptive or have paused specifically to listen to Him.
God's love and ability to express Himself are inexhaustible.
During this year, I've been greatly blessed by hearing personal words from God that have helped me tremendously. I sense they're not all meant for me alone.
Maybe my slow, tortoise-like life has equipped me to be still long enough to hear them, or maybe He has opened my ears to listen better to His voice than I could before.
I call them 'Prayer Whispers' and I'd like to share some with you here. They are words I have tucked into my Prayer Journal and my heart and mind.
Prayer Whisper:Change and renewal
"Change and renewal also require a mourning process. Until you can let go of the old ways of doing, thinking and believing, your arms and heart are too burdened and weighed down to receive the new.
It is a process of trust and faith. Relinquishing the old can make you feel empty, lost and confused because you cannot yet see the things I have in mind to replace what you have surrendered.
In the Divine Exchange I will pour more of Myself into you as you make space for me to do so. You won't be left empty-handed. Rather, you will be set free to receive and have an abundance to give out to others.
Listen to what My Spirit is saying to you. Heed My voice. My desire is to bless you, not to harm you, to give you hope and a future."
Prayer Whisper:Living with challenging circumstances
"Take courage. Though your circumstances may not be as you want them to be, trust that I am working in and through them to produce fruit and a harvest of righteousness in your life.
To step away from the crowd and live differently can feel scary, but I never intended for you to follow everyone else. My plan for your life is individual and personal. It is uniquely tailored for what I want to accomplish in your life, who I desire to reach and impact by your example and testimony.
Though it can feel as if you are wearing clothes that don't fit or chafe you, trust that this is all part of My plan. In time you will begin to notice more and more how I am using the very things you fight against to shape you as my precious child.
The cracks and imperfections in your life enable the Light of my glory to shine all the brighter through them. Keep surrendering yourself and every aspect of your life to Me and it will become beautiful in the process."
Prayer Whisper:When you are in a waiting period
"Great patience is needed in the waiting period. Though it may feel like a dark night of the soul where you cannot perceive any light, keep on trusting and believing that I am already acting on your behalf.
However long the night is, remember that joy comes in the morning. In due time you will experience the joy of needs and expectations met as you surrender them to My refining process.
My best work cannot be hurried. Impatience will spoil what I am achieving in you through the waiting process. Do not lose heart or become discouraged.
Seek My presence; rest in confident, child-like trust and faith; stay rooted and grounded in My Word and refreshed and enabled by My Spirit.
Continue to look for the glimmers of grace which remind you I am at work in your life.
My hand is never taken off you for a second.
I watch you as a mother hen broods over her chicks. Nothing escapes My attention either, so be wise how you act and react.
Allow Me to decide when things happen for you and how they happen.
I will always, always love and keep you safe."

Meanwhile, you may like to try reading 'Jesus Calling' by Sarah Young, or 'My Dear Child' by Colin Urquhart to see how God spoke personally to them.
Or you could watch 'Father's Love Letter' DVD - a beautiful depiction of several Bible verses which speak of God's love for us.
